I used to teach this to my classes (a toned down version) for their writing assignments. This shows the linkages and helps you work out whether anything is missing. You can also do reverse mind maps, where you create a mind map FROM your written material. I did a great many mind maps and concept maps and often switched between mind maps, concept maps and outlines depending on which seemed clearer and what was needed at the time.
